Last updated: 2 September 2026 – after the summer transfer window closed and the first two Premier League matchweeks were completed.
The Premier League is back.
And the 2026/27 season already looks extraordinary.
Arsenal are defending champions.
Manchester City have responded by building one of the most expensive squads English football has ever seen.
Chelsea have started flying under Xabi Alonso.
Manchester United have rebuilt their midfield.
Liverpool have finally signed Bradley Barcola – but Finter still has one major question:
WHERE IS THE NO. 6?
Tottenham have spent heavily but started terribly.
Aston Villa have undergone a huge rebuild.
And promoted Hull City have produced one of the biggest early surprises in the Premier League.
The summer transfer window closed at 23:00 BST on 1 September 2026. Premier League clubs spent approximately £3.46 billion, a new record, with Manchester City alone spending around £458 million.
The window is closed.
The squads are built.
We have already seen two league matches from every club.
So now Finter can make its first serious assessment of all 20 Premier League teams.
🏆 Premier League 2026/27 – The 20 Clubs
The three promoted clubs are:
Coventry City
Ipswich Town
Hull City
They replaced West Ham United, Burnley and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Premier League season began on 21 August 2026 and the final round will be played on 30 May 2027.
🔥 What Have We Learned After Two Matchweeks?
It is far too early to make final conclusions.
But two matches can still reveal interesting clues.
Arsenal
Two matches.
Two victories.
Two clean sheets.
The defending champions started by beating Coventry City and then won 1-0 away at Aston Villa.
It is exactly the type of start that made Arsenal champions last season.
Controlled.
Professional.
Defensively elite.
Manchester City
City have also started with two victories.
The important thing is not simply the points.
It is how quickly a heavily rebuilt squad already looks dangerous.
Erling Haaland remains one of the biggest goalscoring weapons in world football, while City have completely redesigned their midfield following Pep Guardiola’s departure.
Chelsea
Chelsea have six points from their opening two matches.
Their second match, a 4-3 victory against Brighton, demonstrated both sides of Xabi Alonso’s new team.
Chelsea can create enormous attacking pressure.
But they can also leave spaces.
If Alonso solves the defensive balance, Chelsea could become a genuine title challenger.
Hull City – The Early Sensation
Hull are the biggest surprise.
They beat Manchester United 2-0 in their opening match.
Then they beat Coventry City 1-0 away.
Six points.
Two clean sheets.
Zero goals conceded.
Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis and defender Semi Ajayi were both recognised after another outstanding defensive performance, with Ajayi earning a place in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week for the second consecutive matchweek.
Before the season, Finter considered Hull a major relegation candidate.
We are already changing that assessment.
Manchester United – Bruno Responds
Losing 2-0 to Hull was a horrible start.
Then Bruno Fernandes responded.
Against Ipswich, Fernandes scored a hat-trick and added an assist as United won 5-2.
That performance reminded everyone why Bruno remains one of the most influential players in the Premier League.
Liverpool – Exciting, But Still Too Open
Liverpool have opened with two 2-2 draws.
Newcastle 2-2 Liverpool.
Liverpool 2-2 Nottingham Forest.
Four goals scored.
Four goals conceded.
That is almost a perfect summary of the early Andoni Iraola era.
Liverpool can attack.
They can press.
They have enormous individual talent.
But they do not yet control matches consistently enough.
Tottenham
Two matches.
Two defeats.
No goals scored.
For a club that has spent aggressively and completely rebuilt the squad, the start is alarming.
It does not mean Roberto De Zerbi’s project has failed.
But it does mean our pre-season optimism has already been reduced.
Aston Villa
Villa have also started with:
0 points.
0 goals.
After selling several of their most important players, that is worrying.
Villa possess plenty of quality.
But replacing half a team at once is never easy.
💰 The Most Expensive Premier League Transfer Window Ever
Premier League clubs spent approximately:
£3.46 BILLION
during the summer 2026 transfer window.
Manchester City alone spent approximately:
£458 MILLION.
Some of the biggest transfers included:
| Player | Transfer | Approximate Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Enzo Fernández | Chelsea → Man City | £125m |
| Morgan Rogers | Aston Villa → Chelsea | £117m |
| Elliot Anderson | Nottingham Forest → Man City | £116m |
| Bradley Barcola | PSG → Liverpool | £107m + add-ons |
| Sandro Tonali | Newcastle → Tottenham | Up to £100m |
Manchester City’s £125m signing of Enzo Fernández equalled the British transfer record, while Liverpool’s Barcola deal could eventually rise to approximately £123m.
Approximately 38% of Premier League transfer deals were between Premier League clubs, another indication of how much money now circulates internally within English football.
🥇 1. Arsenal – Still Finter’s Title Favourite
Manager: Mikel Arteta
2025/26: Champions
Finter prediction: 1st
Predicted points: 87
Arsenal did not need a revolution.
They needed improvements.
And that is exactly what they have done.
Key Signings
Bruno Guimarães
One of the best midfielders in the Premier League.
He gives Arsenal aggression, technical security, pressing resistance and another player capable of controlling major matches.
Ezri Konsa
An extremely important addition following William Saliba’s long-term injury.
Christos Tzolis
A new attacking option from the left.
Piero Hincapié
His move has been made permanent.
Illan Meslier
Extra depth in goal.
Arsenal have also moved on from Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus, Jakob Kiwior and Christian Nørgaard.
The important thing?
The structure remains intact.
Rice.
Ødegaard.
Saka.
Gyökeres.
Raya.
Gabriel.
Arteta.
And now Guimarães.

🥈 2. Manchester City – The £458 Million Rebuild
Manager: Enzo Maresca
2025/26: 2nd
Finter prediction: 2nd
Predicted points: 84
Manchester City are entering a new era.
Pep Guardiola is gone.
So are many players associated with his team.
Rodri.
Bernardo Silva.
John Stones.
Nathan Aké.
Manuel Akanji.
Nico González.
Tijjani Reijnders.
Savio.
Omar Marmoush.
That is an extraordinary amount of experience to lose.
But City responded with an extraordinary transfer window.
Enzo Fernández
£125 million.
A midfielder Enzo Maresca knows extremely well.
Elliot Anderson
Approximately £116 million.
One of the biggest transfers in Premier League history.
Ayyoub Bouaddi
One of Europe’s most exciting young midfield talents.
Iliman Ndiaye
A brilliant one-against-one attacker.
Allan
Brazilian attacking talent.
City have effectively built a new midfield generation in one summer.
That creates risk.
But it also creates enormous potential.
And they still have:
ERLING HAALAND.
⭐ Finter Transfer Rating: 9/10

🥉 3. Chelsea – Xabi Alonso Has Serious Firepower
Manager: Xabi Alonso
Finter prediction: 3rd
Predicted points: 77
Chelsea have changed again.
But this time the recruitment appears specifically designed around Xabi Alonso’s football.
The biggest deal is:
MORGAN ROGERS.
Approximately £117 million from Aston Villa.
Rogers gives Chelsea physical power, ball carrying, creativity and attacking versatility.
Other arrivals include:
Geovany Quenda.
Marco Palestra.
Maxence Lacroix.
Emmanuel Emegha.
Valentín Barco.
Danny Welbeck.
Jordan Henderson.
Emiliano Martínez.
Chelsea have also sold or moved on players including Enzo Fernández, Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho.
The opening matches have already demonstrated the upside.
Chelsea can score.
A lot.
The question is whether they can control matches well enough to challenge Arsenal and City over 38 games.
⭐ Finter Transfer Rating: 8.5/10
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 3RD – 77 POINTS
4. Manchester United – A Completely New Midfield
Manager: Michael Carrick
Finter prediction: 4th
Predicted points: 72
Manchester United’s biggest weakness has been obvious for years.
Central midfield.
So United did something dramatic.
They effectively rebuilt it.
In came:
Youri Tielemans
The passer.
Andrey Santos
The defensive screen.
Carlos Baleba
The powerful box-to-box runner.
Casemiro has left.
Rasmus Højlund’s Napoli move became permanent.
Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have also departed.
The 2-0 defeat against Hull was deeply disappointing.
But the 5-2 response against Ipswich was impressive.
And Bruno Fernandes produced:
THREE GOALS + ONE ASSIST.
⭐ Finter Transfer Rating: 8.5/10

🔴 5. Liverpool – Barcola Is Brilliant… But WHERE IS THE NO. 6?
Manager: Andoni Iraola
2025/26: 5th
Finter prediction: 5th
Predicted points: 69
Liverpool have spent enormous money.
And they have signed very good footballers.
That is important.
This is not an argument that Liverpool bought bad players.
They did not.
The question is:
DID THEY BUY THE RIGHT TYPES OF PLAYERS?
The headline signing is:
BRADLEY BARCOLA.
Liverpool signed the France international from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial fee of around £107m, potentially rising towards £123m.
Barcola gives Liverpool:
speed,
dribbling,
one-against-one threat,
movement behind the defence,
goals,
assists,
Champions League experience.
He can become a superstar at Anfield.
Liverpool also added:
Jérémy Jacquet
Víctor Muñoz
Ronald Araújo on loan
while Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté, Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones are among the major departures.
But Finter’s biggest concern remains:
THE DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD.
Liverpool have Gravenberch.
Mac Allister.
Wirtz.
Szoboszlai.
There is enormous technical quality.
But Iraola’s football creates huge physical and tactical demands.
When Liverpool press high, somebody has to:
protect the centre-backs,
stop transitions,
win second balls,
cover advancing full-backs,
organise rest defence,
slow counter-attacks,
give the attacking midfielders freedom.
That is why Finter still believes Liverpool should have signed an elite defensive specialist.
The opening two matches have not removed that concern.
Two 2-2 draws.
Four goals scored.
Four conceded.
Liverpool may be incredibly entertaining this season.
But can they become controlled enough to challenge for the title?
That is the question.

6. Newcastle United – A Huge Rebuild, But Still Dangerous
Manager: Matthias Jaissle
Finter prediction: 6th
Predicted points: 63
Newcastle lost:
Sandro Tonali.
Bruno Guimarães.
Anthony Gordon.
That is a huge amount of quality.
Their replacements include:
Nico González.
Aladji Bamba.
Bazoumana Touré.
Amar Dedić.
Sean Steur.
Newcastle have therefore attempted to replace profile with profile rather than simply buying famous names.
Four points from two matches is a solid start.
And the 2-0 victory away at Tottenham showed that this team still carries serious quality.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 6TH – 63 POINTS
7. Brentford – Underestimate Them Again at Your Own Risk
Manager: Keith Andrews
Finter prediction: 7th
Predicted points: 59
Brentford continually lose players.
And continually find replacements.
This summer they added:
Mamadou Sangaré.
El Hadji Malick Diouf.
Jaidon Anthony.
Callum Wilson.
Jannik Schuster.
They have started strongly again.
Brentford remain one of English football’s smartest recruitment organisations.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 7TH – 59 POINTS
8. Brighton – Sell, Recruit, Develop, Repeat
Manager: Fabian Hürzeler
Finter prediction: 8th
Predicted points: 58
Carlos Baleba is gone.
Jan Paul van Hecke is gone.
James Milner has retired.
Yet Brighton keep finding new players.
Arrivals include:
Pascal Struijk.
Luka Vušković.
Zadok Yohanna.
Costinha.
Michael Svoboda.
Rodrigo Rego.
Brighton’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa showed how dangerous they can be.
Their 4-3 defeat against Chelsea showed the other side.
Brighton matches may once again be compulsory viewing.

🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 8TH – 58 POINTS
9. Everton – David Moyes Builds Experience
Manager: David Moyes
Finter prediction: 9th
Predicted points: 55
Everton’s recruitment feels very different from several other Premier League clubs.
There is experience.
Physicality.
Reliability.
Hayden Hackney.
Christian Nørgaard.
Brennan Johnson.
Tyrique George.
Merlin Röhl.
And another Jack Grealish loan.
Iliman Ndiaye’s departure to Manchester City hurts.
But Everton look capable of becoming exactly the type of team nobody enjoys playing against.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 9TH – 55 POINTS
10. Tottenham – Huge Spending, Horrible Start
Manager: Roberto De Zerbi
Finter prediction: 10th
Predicted points: 54
Tottenham’s transfer window is astonishing.
They added:
Sandro Tonali.
Mateus Fernandes.
Savio.
Omar Marmoush.
Andy Robertson.
Marcos Senesi.
Jan Paul van Hecke.
Martin Dúbravka.
That is almost a new team.
On paper:
Outstanding.
On the pitch so far:
Not outstanding.
Two games.
Two defeats.
Zero goals.
Finter originally had Tottenham much higher.
We are moving them down until De Zerbi proves this enormous rebuild can function.
⭐ Transfer Window: 9/10
⚠️ Season Start: 2/10
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 10TH – 54 POINTS
11. AFC Bournemouth – Antonio Silva Could Be a Brilliant Signing
Manager: Marco Rose
Finter prediction: 11th
Predicted points: 52
Bournemouth lost Marcos Senesi to Tottenham.
But Antonio Silva is an extremely interesting replacement.
The Portuguese centre-back already has significant international experience despite his age.
Álvaro Rodríguez gives additional competition in attack.
Bournemouth also have European football this season.
That increases the physical challenge.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 11TH – 52 POINTS
12. Aston Villa – The Biggest Rebuild in the League?
Manager: Unai Emery
Finter prediction: 12th
Predicted points: 50
Look at the players Aston Villa lost:
Morgan Rogers.
Youri Tielemans.
Emiliano Martínez.
Ezri Konsa.
Ollie Watkins.
Lucas Digne.
That is not normal squad turnover.
That is an entire spine disappearing.
Villa responded with:
Johan Manzambi.
João Gomes.
Zion Suzuki.
Matteo Ruggeri.
Leon Goretzka.
Nicolas Jackson.
Alejandro Garnacho.
There is a lot of quality.
But relationships matter.
Patterns matter.
Understanding teammates matters.
Villa have started:
two matches,
two defeats,
zero goals.
That is why Finter is lowering them significantly.

🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 12TH – 50 POINTS
13. Leeds United – Quietly Building a Strong Team
Manager: Daniel Farke
Finter prediction: 13th
Predicted points: 48
Leeds added:
Harry Wilson.
James Trafford.
Tarik Muharemović.
All three transfers make sense.
Wilson offers proven Premier League attacking production.
Trafford could become Leeds’ goalkeeper for years.
Muharemović helps compensate for Pascal Struijk’s departure.
Four points from the opening two matches is an encouraging start.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 13TH – 48 POINTS
14. Nottingham Forest – Replacing Elliot Anderson Is Almost Impossible
Manager: Oliver Glasner
Finter prediction: 14th
Predicted points: 46
Selling Elliot Anderson for around £116 million is extraordinary business financially.
But replacing his influence is much harder.
Forest have added players including:
Ousmane Diomande.
Daniel Muñoz.
Xaver Schlager.
Liam Delap.
And a 2-2 draw at Anfield showed that Forest are still capable of troubling major teams.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 14TH – 46 POINTS
🐯 15. Hull City – Finter’s Biggest Early Upgrade
Manager: Sergej Jakirović
Promoted club
Finter prediction: 15th
Predicted points: 44
Before the season:
Finter had Hull near the bottom.
After two games?
We are moving them significantly higher.
Hull added:
Konstantinos Tzolakis.
Matt Targett.
Jack Butland.
Hidemasa Morita.
Lucas Gourna-Douath.
Mohamed-Ali Cho.
Joe Gelhardt.
Jens Hjerto-Dahl.
The biggest impact has already come from Tzolakis.
Two games.
Two clean sheets.
Two wins.
Hull will still have difficult periods.
But suddenly survival looks realistic.

🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 15TH – 44 POINTS
16. Crystal Palace – Too Much Change?
Manager: Pierre Sage
Finter prediction: 16th
Predicted points: 42
Crystal Palace have lost important players, including Maxence Lacroix.
They have brought in new options, but the opening two matches have been difficult.
Six goals conceded.
Two defeats.
A 4-1 defeat against Manchester City was particularly concerning.
Palace still possess enough ability to survive.
But Finter no longer views them as a comfortable mid-table team.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 16TH – 42 POINTS
17. Sunderland – Experience Could Save Them
Manager: Régis Le Bris
Finter prediction: 17th
Predicted points: 40
Sunderland were one of the biggest surprises of 2025/26.
The second season can be harder.
Teams know you.
Expectations change.
Momentum disappears.
But Sunderland still have players with leadership and experience.
Thomas Meunier adds more.
Granit Xhaka remains enormously important.
They already have three points.
Finter believes they survive.
Just.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 17TH – 40 POINTS
🔻 18. Fulham – A Very Tight Relegation Battle
Manager: Álvaro Arbeloa
Finter prediction: 18th
Predicted points: 37
Fulham’s biggest signing may be the manager.
Álvaro Arbeloa has recruited players he knows from Real Madrid.
Gonzalo García.
César Palacios.
They have also added Shea Charles and Jonah Kusi-Asare.
But Harry Wilson has left.
Raúl Jiménez has left.
Sasa Lukic has left.
Issa Diop has left.
Two opening defeats increase the pressure.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 18TH – 37 POINTS
🔻 19. Ipswich Town – Better Equipped Than Last Time
Manager: Gary O’Neil
Promoted club
Finter prediction: 19th
Predicted points: 35
Ipswich have not returned to the Premier League quietly.
They have added serious experience.
Abdul Fatawu.
Daizen Maeda.
Issa Diop.
Florentino Luís.
Sasa Lukic.
Julio Enciso.
Exequiel Palacios.
This is not a typical promoted squad.
Ipswich beat Sunderland in their opening match.
Then Bruno Fernandes destroyed them at Old Trafford.
The attacking quality is there.
The biggest question is the defence.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 19TH – 35 POINTS
🔻 20. Coventry City – Early Warning Signs
Manager: Frank Lampard
Promoted club
Finter prediction: 20th
Predicted points: 31
Coventry dominated the Championship.
But the Premier League is different.
They added:
Aurele Amenda.
Ethan Pinnock.
Caleb Yirenkyi.
Loum Tchaouna.
Frank Onyeka.
Taiwo Awoniyi.
Sidiki Cherif.
There is quality in that list.
But the opening has been brutal.
Two matches.
Zero points.
Zero goals.
Four conceded.
The 1-0 home defeat against Hull was especially damaging because those are exactly the matches promoted clubs need to win.
🔮 FINTER PREDICTION: 20TH – 31 POINTS

🏆 Why Does Finter Still Choose Arsenal Over Manchester City?
Manchester City may have had the most spectacular transfer window.
But football is not FIFA Career Mode.
New players need time.
Relationships matter.
Patterns matter.
Defensive communication matters.
Arsenal already have those things.
They know:
how to defend a one-goal lead,
how to control central areas,
how to win through set pieces,
how to survive difficult away matches,
how to grind out 1-0 victories.
City may eventually develop into the better team.
But entering September?
Finter still gives Arsenal the edge.

🤯 Transfer of the Summer?
There are plenty of candidates.
But the biggest statement may be:
ENZO FERNÁNDEZ → MANCHESTER CITY
City paid approximately £125 million.
Fernández therefore became the first player ever to be transferred for more than £100 million twice.
That is extraordinary.
🔴 The Transfer Window’s Biggest Question: Liverpool’s No. 6
Liverpool’s transfer window could become one of the most debated in the league.
Barcola?
Brilliant player.
Jacquet?
Outstanding potential.
Muñoz?
Exciting.
Araújo?
Useful experience and physicality.
But Finter continues to ask:
WHO PROTECTS EVERYTHING?
Sometimes the most important transfer is not the winger who scores ten goals.
It is the midfielder who allows everyone else to play.
The specialist defensive midfielder can make:
Wirtz better.
Mac Allister better.
Szoboszlai better.
Gravenberch better.
The full-backs better.
The centre-backs better.
The pressing better.
Liverpool bought:
quality.
speed.
talent.
future potential.
But did they buy enough:
BALANCE?
We are not convinced.
📜 New Premier League Rules for 2026/27
There are several important rule changes this season.
The overall theme is:
MORE FOOTBALL – LESS TIME-WASTING.
🩹 One Minute Off After Injury Treatment
Players receiving treatment or assessment on the pitch will normally have to remain off the field for at least one minute after play restarts.
The previous Premier League period was 30 seconds.
⏱️ Five-Second Countdown
If the referee believes a player is clearly delaying a throw-in or goal kick, a visible five-second countdown can begin.
If the restart is not taken:
Delayed throw-in → possession can go to the opposition.
Delayed goal kick → the opposition can receive a corner.
🔄 Ten Seconds to Leave During a Substitution
A substituted player is expected to leave quickly.
If they deliberately exceed the time limit, the substitute can be forced to wait.
🟨🟥 VAR and Second Yellow Cards
VAR can now intervene if a clearly incorrect second yellow card directly causes a player to be sent off.
🧤 Goalkeeper Injury Trial
If play is stopped for a goalkeeper injury, the manager may have to nominate an outfield player who must also temporarily leave the pitch.
The idea is simple:
make tactical goalkeeper “injuries” less attractive.
These changes are part of the official 2026/27 Premier League implementation.
Finter has already produced a complete English guide:
Premier League Rules 2026/27 – New Rules, VAR, Time-Wasting, Injuries and Substitutions
📅 Premier League Matchweek 3 – What Comes Next?

Brighton vs Leeds
Fulham vs Crystal Palace

The biggest game?
ARSENAL VS CHELSEA.
A major early test.
If Chelsea want to be considered genuine title challengers, this is exactly the type of match where they need to prove it.
