Fastest Hat-Tricks in Football History – Top 25 Records, Stories and Videos

Scoring three goals in one football match is special.

Scoring three before the opposition has even had time to understand what is happening is something else entirely.

Sadio Mané needed only two minutes and 56 seconds to break the Premier League record. Robert Lewandowski scored a Bundesliga hat-trick in three minutes and 22 seconds before continuing until he had scored five goals in less than nine minutes.

Mohamed Salah came off the bench and produced the fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history. Gift Orban broke the record across all major UEFA men’s club competitions, while László Kiss still owns the fastest hat-trick at the men’s FIFA World Cup.

The official world record is even more remarkable.

Guinness World Records recognises Tommy Ross for scoring three times in only 90 seconds for Ross County against Nairn County in 1964. Other performances at amateur and lower-league level have been reported as even faster, which makes the answer slightly more complicated than it first appears.

This guide ranks 25 of the fastest recorded hat-tricks in football history and explores the records, stories, competitions and videos behind them.

Who scored the fastest hat-trick ever?

The answer depends on how the record is defined.

Tommy Ross holds the officially recognised Guinness World Record. He scored three goals in 90 seconds for Ross County against Nairn County on 28 November 1964.

Two faster performances have been widely reported:

  • Alex Torr scored a 70-second hat-trick in English amateur football in 2013.
  • Magnus Arvidsson scored three times in 89 seconds in Swedish football in 1995.

Arvidsson’s performance is documented by UEFA, but it came outside Sweden’s top division. Torr’s achievement occurred in a local Sunday League match and does not have the same level of official verification as the Guinness record. UEFA identifies Ross’ 90-second treble, Arvidsson’s 89-second performance and Jimmy O’Connor’s 2-minute-13-second Irish record among Europe’s quickest reported hat-tricks.

The most accurate conclusion is therefore:

Tommy Ross owns the official world record, while Alex Torr owns the fastest widely reported hat-trick at any level.

How is the speed of a hat-trick measured?

A fast hat-trick is normally measured from the exact time of the first goal to the exact time of the third.

It is not necessarily measured from the beginning of the match.

A player could score in the 70th, 72nd and 73rd minutes and produce a quicker hat-trick than a player who scored in the first, seventh and 12th minutes.

Historical comparisons are difficult because:

  • Older matches were not always recorded to the exact second.
  • Some sources use rounded match minutes.
  • Added-time goals can be registered differently.
  • Lower-league records may lack complete video evidence.
  • Some lists include amateur football and others only include professional matches.
  • Competition organisers may define their records differently.

For that reason, this ranking distinguishes between officially recognised records and widely reported performances.

1. Alex Torr – Three goals in 70 seconds

The fastest widely reported hat-trick at any level was scored in English amateur football.

Alex Torr was playing for Rawson Springs in a Sheffield Sunday League match in 2013 when he scored three goals in only 70 seconds.

His team won 7-1, and Torr reportedly scored four times in total.

The performance is quicker than Tommy Ross’ Guinness World Record, but it was achieved in a local amateur competition. The match did not have the same official timekeeping, media coverage or independent verification expected for a Guinness record.

That distinction matters.

A spectacular performance can be real without automatically meeting the formal requirements of a recognised world record.

Record: Fastest widely reported hat-trick at any level.

2. Magnus Arvidsson – One second faster than Ross

Magnus Arvidsson scored his extraordinary hat-trick for Hässleholms IF against Landskrona BoIS in 1995.

Only 89 seconds separated his first and third goals.

UEFA includes Arvidsson’s performance among Europe’s fastest league hat-tricks and reports that his three goals helped Hässleholm come from behind to win 5-3 and avoid relegation.

Arvidsson later played in the Bundesliga for Hansa Rostock and represented Sweden internationally.

His story proves that a lower-division record does not necessarily belong to an unknown amateur. He developed into a successful professional striker after producing one of football’s fastest recorded trebles.

Record: Fastest documented hat-trick in Swedish senior football outside the top division.

3. Tommy Ross – The official Guinness World Record

Tommy Ross was only 18 years old when he made football history.

Ross County faced Nairn County in Dingwall, Scotland, on 28 November 1964. Ross scored three times in exactly 90 seconds.

Guinness World Records continues to recognise the achievement as the fastest time to score three goals in a football match.

The record was not always universally known.

For many years, Jimmy O’Connor’s hat-trick in Ireland was frequently described as the fastest verified treble. Ross’ performance was eventually investigated and formally recognised after historical evidence was accepted.

Ross later played for clubs including Peterborough United, York City and Wigan Athletic.

Record: Official Guinness World Record for the fastest football hat-trick.

4. Eduardo Maglioni – Argentina’s 110-second explosion

Eduardo Maglioni produced one of the quickest hat-tricks ever recorded in professional top-level football.

Playing for Independiente against Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in March 1973, Maglioni scored three times in approximately one minute and 50 seconds.

The exact historical timing varies slightly between reports, but the achievement is widely recognised as Argentina’s fastest professional hat-trick. The BBC included Maglioni’s time when comparing Sadio Mané’s later Premier League record.

Maglioni was part of a highly successful Independiente generation and won the Copa Libertadores with the Argentine club.

Record: Fastest widely recognised hat-trick in Argentine professional football.

5. Valentino Mazzola – Three Serie A goals in two minutes

Valentino Mazzola was one of the central figures in the legendary Grande Torino team.

In April 1947, he reportedly scored three goals in two minutes as Torino defeated Vicenza 6-0 in Serie A.

UEFA includes the performance in its overview of Europe’s fastest league hat-tricks.

Exact second-by-second data from the 1940s is unavailable, so Mazzola’s time is normally presented as an approximate two-minute interval.

Even with that uncertainty, scoring three times in such a short period in Italy’s top division remains an extraordinary achievement.

Record: One of the fastest hat-tricks in the history of European top-flight football.

6. Jimmy O’Connor – The hat-trick that transformed a derby

Jimmy O’Connor’s record is not only about speed.

It is also one of the greatest comeback stories on this list.

Shelbourne were losing 2-0 to Dublin rivals Bohemians in November 1967.

The 19-year-old O’Connor then scored three goals in two minutes and 13 seconds, turning a two-goal deficit into a 3-2 lead.

That became the final score.

UEFA identifies O’Connor’s performance as the Irish record, and Shelbourne continues to celebrate the achievement as one of the greatest moments in the club’s history.

A plaque at Tolka Park commemorates the treble.

Record: Fastest verified hat-trick in Irish league football.

7. James Hayter – A substitute who made history in 140 seconds

James Hayter began Bournemouth’s match against Wrexham on the bench.

With only a few minutes remaining and Bournemouth already leading comfortably, Hayter was finally sent onto the pitch.

He scored three times in two minutes and 20 seconds.

Bournemouth won 6-0, and Hayter established the record for the fastest hat-trick in English Football League history.

The story became even more memorable because his parents had left the stadium early.

They assumed their son would not be used and attempted to catch an earlier ferry home. They had to listen to his record-breaking goals on the radio.

Record: Fastest hat-trick in English Football League history.

8. Erik Karlsen – A Norwegian treble completed by the seventh minute

Erik Karlsen scored three goals in approximately two minutes and 30 seconds for Lillestrøm against Mjøndalen in May 1977.

The hat-trick was completed by the seventh minute of the match.

UEFA lists it as Norway’s fastest top-flight treble.

Karlsen’s record is unusual because it was both an extremely quick hat-trick and an exceptionally early one.

Many rapid trebles occur late in matches when defenders are tired and the game has opened up. Karlsen produced his before the match had properly settled.

Record: Fastest reported hat-trick in Norway’s top division.

9. Sadio Mané – The Premier League record

On 16 May 2015, Southampton faced Aston Villa at St Mary’s Stadium.

Sadio Mané opened the scoring in the 13th minute.

Before the clock had reached 17 minutes, he had completed his hat-trick.

The exact interval between the first and third goals was two minutes and 56 seconds.

Mané broke Robbie Fowler’s previous Premier League record of four minutes and 33 seconds. The record still stands in 2026.

Southampton won the match 6-1.

Mané’s three goals demonstrated different attacking qualities:

  1. He reacted quickly to defensive uncertainty.
  2. He followed up an initial save and converted the rebound.
  3. He produced a composed finish after intelligent movement into space.

Record: Fastest hat-trick in Premier League history.

10. Robert Lewandowski – Five goals in nine minutes

Bayern Munich were losing 1-0 to Wolfsburg when Robert Lewandowski entered the match as a half-time substitute.

What happened next remains one of the greatest goalscoring performances in football history.

Lewandowski scored:

  • His first goal in the 51st minute
  • His second in the 52nd
  • His third in the 55th
  • His fourth in the 57th
  • His fifth in the 60th

His first three goals arrived in three minutes and 22 seconds.

He reached four goals in five minutes and 42 seconds before completing his five-goal performance in eight minutes and 59 seconds.

Bayern turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 victory.

Lewandowski’s final goal was a spectacular acrobatic volley. Pep Guardiola’s stunned reaction on the touchline became almost as famous as the goal itself.

Records:

  • Fastest Bundesliga hat-trick
  • Fastest four goals in a Bundesliga match
  • Fastest five goals in a Bundesliga match
  • First substitute to score five times in a Bundesliga game

11. Gift Orban – The fastest UEFA club hat-trick

Gift Orban produced a historic performance for Gent against İstanbul Başakşehir in the UEFA Europa Conference League in March 2023.

Only three minutes and 25 seconds separated his first and third goals.

UEFA confirmed that the treble was the fastest in the history of its men’s club competitions, surpassing the quickest hat-tricks in both the Champions League and Europa League.

Gent won 4-1 and advanced comfortably.

Orban’s performance was especially impressive because the match was part of a European knockout tie rather than a low-pressure group match.

12. Alexander Sørloth – LaLiga history in 3 minutes and 57 seconds

Alexander Sørloth faced his former club Real Sociedad while playing for Atlético Madrid in May 2025.

The Norwegian striker scored in the seventh, tenth and 11th minutes.

The official interval between his first and third goals was three minutes and 57 seconds.

He then added a fourth goal in the 30th minute as Atlético won 4-0.

Atlético Madrid described it as the earliest hat-trick from kick-off in LaLiga history and the fastest of the 21st century. Reuters also reported it as the fastest hat-trick in the competition’s history.

The performance was even more remarkable because it came against the club Sørloth had represented earlier in his career.

Record: Fastest LaLiga hat-trick and earliest LaLiga hat-trick from kick-off.

13. Fabienne Humm – The fastest Women’s World Cup hat-trick

Switzerland faced Ecuador at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Fabienne Humm scored three goals in a period officially described as five match minutes. Precise event data places the interval between the first and third goals at approximately 247 seconds, or four minutes and seven seconds.

Switzerland won 10-1.

Humm’s goals demonstrated three different types of finishing:

  • A controlled long-range strike
  • A header
  • A close-range finish

That variety makes the achievement more than a sequence of simple tap-ins.

14. Loïs Openda – Three goals in four minutes and 31 seconds

Loïs Openda scored his rapid hat-trick for Lens against Clermont in March 2023.

His three goals arrived in four minutes and 31 seconds.

Ligue 1’s official website described it as the competition’s fastest hat-trick in the previous 50 years.

Lens won the match 4-0.

Openda’s performance highlighted the qualities that later made him one of Europe’s most dangerous transition forwards:

  • Explosive acceleration
  • Direct running
  • Intelligent positioning
  • Quick finishing
  • The ability to attack space behind a defence

Record: Fastest Ligue 1 hat-trick in at least half a century.

15. Kevin Gameiro – The substitute who destroyed Sporting Gijón

Atlético Madrid were drawing 1-1 away to Sporting Gijón in February 2017.

Kevin Gameiro entered as a substitute and completely transformed the match.

He scored in the 80th, 81st and 85th minutes, completing his hat-trick in approximately four minutes and 44 seconds.

Atlético won 4-1.

Gameiro’s treble became the fastest LaLiga hat-trick of the modern era until Sørloth broke the record in 2025. Atlético’s own historical review lists Gameiro’s time as 4:44.

The lesson: A fresh striker can exploit tired defenders, larger spaces and a match that has become tactically stretched.

16. David Villa – Three goals in four minutes and 46 seconds

David Villa scored his first Valencia hat-trick against Athletic Club at San Mamés in April 2006.

Only four minutes and 46 seconds separated the first and third goals.

Valencia won 3-0, with Villa scoring every goal. The club continues to recognise the treble as one of the fastest in LaLiga history.

Villa was one of the most complete finishers of his generation.

He could score:

  • With either foot
  • From outside the penalty area
  • After running behind the defence
  • With very few touches
  • From central or wide positions

Record: One of the quickest hat-tricks in Spanish top-flight history.

17. Harut Karapetyan – The five-minute MLS record

Harut Karapetyan scored three goals in five minutes for LA Galaxy against Dallas Burn in June 1998.

The Galaxy won 8-1.

MLS continues to identify Karapetyan’s performance as the fastest hat-trick in league history.

Karapetyan was a substitute, adding another record to the pattern of fresh attackers entering open matches and immediately taking advantage.

Record: Fastest hat-trick in MLS history.

18. Keita Baldé – Five minutes of Serie A chaos

Keita Baldé scored a rapid hat-trick for Lazio against Palermo in April 2017.

His goals arrived in a little over five minutes as Lazio raced into an extraordinary first-half lead.

Lazio eventually won 6-2.

The performance is frequently recognised as the fastest Serie A hat-trick of the modern data era.

Keita’s pace caused enormous problems for a Palermo defence that lost its structure after conceding.

Once Lazio won the ball, Keita repeatedly attacked spaces before the defenders could reorganise.

19. Hany Mukhtar – A six-minute hat-trick before the 16th minute

Hany Mukhtar scored in the tenth, 13th and 16th minutes as Nashville SC defeated Chicago Fire 5-1 in 2021.

The six-minute interval was the second-fastest in MLS history behind Karapetyan.

It was also the fastest hat-trick from the beginning of a match in MLS history.

The third goal came directly from a free kick, showing Mukhtar’s versatility as both a finisher and a set-piece specialist.

Records:

  • Fastest MLS hat-trick from kick-off
  • Second-fastest MLS hat-trick by elapsed time

20. Mohamed Salah – The Champions League record

Liverpool were playing Rangers at Ibrox in October 2022.

Salah started on the bench and entered during the second half.

He needed only six minutes and 12 seconds to score three times.

Liverpool won 7-1, and Salah broke the Champions League record previously held by Bafétimbi Gomis.

UEFA still lists Salah first, ahead of Kylian Mbappé’s 2025 treble.

Salah required very few touches.

His performance was built on:

  • Fast recognition of space
  • Controlled finishing
  • Movement across defenders
  • Immediate adaptation after entering
  • Confidence to shoot early

Record: Fastest hat-trick in UEFA Champions League history.

21. Kylian Mbappé – Only 30 seconds behind Salah

Kylian Mbappé scored four goals for Real Madrid against Olympiacos in November 2025.

Three of those goals arrived in only six minutes and 42 seconds.

That made his treble the second-fastest in Champions League history, only 30 seconds slower than Salah’s record. UEFA’s updated 2026 statistics rank Salah first, Mbappé second and Bafétimbi Gomis third.

Mbappé’s performance combined:

  • Elite acceleration
  • Precise movement behind defenders
  • Quick decisions inside the penalty area
  • Composure after Real Madrid’s difficult start
  • The ability to attack from wide and central positions

Record: Second-fastest Champions League hat-trick.

22. László Kiss – The men’s World Cup record

Hungary faced El Salvador at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.

László Kiss began the match on the bench.

After entering during the second half, he scored three goals in seven minutes and 42 seconds.

Hungary won 10-1.

Kiss remains the only substitute to score a hat-trick in a men’s World Cup match, and FIFA continues to recognise his treble as the fastest in the tournament’s history.

23. Bafétimbi Gomis – The Champions League record before Salah

Lyon needed an extraordinary result against Dinamo Zagreb in December 2011 to have any chance of progressing in the Champions League.

The French side fell behind.

Then the match changed completely.

Bafétimbi Gomis scored in the 45th, 48th and 52nd minutes and later added a fourth goal.

Lyon won 7-1 and advanced from the group.

Gomis’ treble was registered at approximately eight minutes and remained the Champions League record until Salah broke it in 2022. UEFA now ranks it third behind Salah and Mbappé.

Former record: Fastest Champions League hat-trick from 2011 until 2022.

24. Patson Daka – The Europa League record

Leicester City were losing 2-0 away to Spartak Moscow in October 2021.

Patson Daka changed the entire match.

The Zambian striker scored four goals as Leicester recovered to win 4-3.

His first three came in nine minutes and 34 seconds, making him the first player to complete a Europa League hat-trick in under ten minutes. UEFA still lists the performance as the competition record.

Daka’s performance demonstrated several classic striker qualities:

  • Curved runs behind the defence
  • Composure in one-on-one situations
  • Awareness of the goalkeeper
  • Immediate transition after winning possession
  • Confidence after the first goal

25. Claudiu Keșerü – Three goals against Danish opposition

FCSB faced Danish champions AaB in the Europa League in September 2014.

The match remained goalless for an hour.

FCSB then scored six times.

Claudiu Keșerü completed his hat-trick in ten minutes and 56 seconds as the Romanian side won 6-0.

The performance held the Europa League record until Daka surpassed it in 2021. It remains second on UEFA’s official all-time list.

Record: Second-fastest Europa League hat-trick.

Which record is the most impressive?

There is no single correct answer.

Fastest reported time

Alex Torr’s 70-second hat-trick is the fastest widely reported performance, but it came in amateur football and is not the official Guinness record.

Official world record

Tommy Ross’ 90-second treble has been recognised by Guinness World Records.

Strongest domestic league record

Sadio Mané’s Premier League hat-trick combines an elite competition, exact timing, strong opposition and worldwide video evidence.

Greatest overall scoring explosion

Lewandowski’s hat-trick was only the beginning.

He continued until he had scored five goals in eight minutes and 59 seconds.

Greatest international tournament record

Kiss and Humm produced their performances at FIFA World Cups—the biggest stages in international football.

Fastest major European club record

Gift Orban’s three minutes and 25 seconds remains the quickest hat-trick across UEFA’s men’s club competitions.

Fastest hat-trick and earliest hat-trick are not the same record

The fastest hat-trick measures the time between the first and third goals.

The earliest hat-trick asks how quickly the third goal was scored from kick-off.

Sørloth completed his LaLiga hat-trick after only ten minutes and 46 seconds of the match.

Mukhtar completed his MLS treble by the 16th minute.

Lewandowski needed only three minutes and 22 seconds between his goals, but his first did not arrive until the 51st minute.

These are different achievements and should not be placed in the same record category without explanation.

Fastest hat-tricks scored by substitutes

Several of the most famous records belong to players who began on the bench.

PlayerHat-trick timeCompetition
James Hayter2:20English Football League
Robert Lewandowski3:22Bundesliga
Kevin GameiroAround 4:44LaLiga
Mohamed Salah6:12Champions League
László Kiss7:42Men’s World Cup
Patson Daka9:34Europa League

A substitute may benefit from:

  • Fresh legs against tired defenders
  • Time to study the match from the bench
  • A clear tactical instruction
  • More space during the final stages
  • Defenders taking greater risks
  • Less time to overthink the situation

The player must still enter the match and immediately reach maximum intensity.

What is a perfect hat-trick?

A perfect hat-trick consists of:

  • One goal with the right foot
  • One goal with the left foot
  • One goal with the head

Mike Newell scored a perfect Champions League hat-trick for Blackburn Rovers against Rosenborg in 1995.

It took approximately nine minutes.

UEFA continues to recognise Newell’s performance as the fastest perfect hat-trick in Champions League history.

A perfect hat-trick is rare because the player must demonstrate three different finishing techniques in the same match.

Why do goals sometimes arrive so quickly?

A quick hat-trick is not created by one factor alone.

The defending team loses its organisation

After conceding, players may become:

  • Frustrated
  • Too aggressive
  • Slow to recover their positions
  • Unclear about responsibilities
  • Desperate to attack immediately

That creates another chance before the team has mentally recovered.

The scoring team wins possession back immediately

Aggressive counter-pressing can keep the opposition trapped.

Lewandowski’s five-goal performance occurred during a period when Bayern repeatedly regained possession and attacked before Wolfsburg could reset.

The striker’s confidence increases

A striker who has just scored is more likely to:

  • Shoot earlier
  • Attack space more aggressively
  • Take fewer unnecessary touches
  • Trust instinct
  • Anticipate rebounds

The player stops thinking about whether a chance will arrive and starts expecting it.

A fresh attacker faces tired defenders

This helps explain why so many records belong to substitutes.

A fast attacker entering after 70 minutes may face defenders who have already spent most of the match:

  • Sprinting
  • Tackling
  • Changing direction
  • Tracking runners
  • Making difficult decisions

The match becomes stretched

A team that falls behind often pushes more players forward.

That creates larger spaces for counter-attacks, through balls and runs behind the defensive line.

What young strikers can learn from the fastest hat-tricks

The record goals were not all spectacular shots from 30 metres.

Many came from simple actions performed at exceptional speed.

Follow every shot

Mané’s second goal against Aston Villa came after a rebound.

A striker should continue moving after the first attempt rather than assuming the attack is over.

Return to position immediately

Scoring one goal does not guarantee another opportunity.

Elite strikers celebrate, refocus and prepare for the restart.

Move before the pass

The best forwards do not wait for the ball before beginning their run.

They read:

  • The passer’s body shape
  • The defender’s position
  • The goalkeeper’s distance
  • The available passing lane

Use fewer touches near goal

Salah, Mané and Lewandowski needed very few touches during their record performances.

A high-quality first touch and fast finish are often more valuable than an unnecessary dribble inside the penalty area.

Expect rebounds

Strikers should anticipate:

  • Goalkeeper saves
  • Blocked shots
  • Deflections
  • Shots against the post
  • Poor clearances
  • Loose balls after crosses

A player who expects a rebound reacts before a player who merely hopes one might appear.

Three training drills inspired by record hat-tricks

Drill 1: Three finishes in 30 seconds

The striker completes three different actions:

  1. Receive and finish a pass from the edge of the penalty area.
  2. React immediately to a rebound or second ball.
  3. Attack a cross or cutback from a wide position.

Award points for:

  • Fast movement between actions
  • Finishing with few touches
  • Using both feet
  • Attacking rebounds
  • Remaining composed

Drill 2: Attack again immediately after scoring

Play a small-sided game with two goals.

Whenever a team scores, the coach immediately introduces another ball and allows the same team to attack again.

The defending team must quickly:

  • Communicate
  • Recover positions
  • Identify runners
  • Respond mentally after conceding

The exercise recreates the moment when many quick hat-tricks are produced.

Drill 3: The super-sub challenge

Three teams rotate through a small-sided match.

After two minutes, two fresh attackers enter for each side.

Their tasks are to:

  • Press immediately
  • Threaten the space behind the defence
  • Finish quickly
  • Attack tired opponents
  • Make forward runs without the ball

The exercise teaches players how a substitute can change the rhythm of a match.

Conclusion

The fastest hat-trick in football history is not as simple to identify as it first appears.

Alex Torr reportedly scored three times in only 70 seconds in amateur football.

Magnus Arvidsson needed 89 seconds in Sweden.

But Tommy Ross’ 90-second performance remains the officially recognised Guinness World Record.

At the highest levels, several records stand out:

  • Sadio Mané owns the Premier League record.
  • Robert Lewandowski owns the Bundesliga record and scored five goals in nine minutes.
  • Gift Orban owns the record across UEFA’s men’s club competitions.
  • Alexander Sørloth owns the LaLiga record.
  • Mohamed Salah owns the Champions League record.
  • Patson Daka owns the Europa League record.
  • László Kiss owns the men’s World Cup record.
  • Fabienne Humm owns the Women’s World Cup record.

A rapid hat-trick is not created by luck alone.

It requires movement, awareness, confidence, positioning, quick finishing and the ability to refocus immediately after scoring.

Some football records are built across an entire career.

These records were created in only a few extraordinary minutes.
