What Is England’s Biggest Football Club?

Manchester United vs Liverpool vs Arsenal vs Manchester City vs Chelsea — an evidence-based battle over trophies, fans, money, moments and legacy. Plus reader voting, tables, a club-selector game and a printable guide.

Short answer: There is no universal winner. Manchester United and Liverpool share the all-time English top-flight record (20 each); Liverpool lead English clubs with six European Cups/Champions Leagues; Manchester United have the most Premier League-era titles (13); and Liverpool led English clubs in Deloitte’s 2026 revenue rankings. Which measure matters most to you?

How to read the figures: Men’s first teams unless noted; title totals are through the completed 2025/26 season, while revenues refer to 2024/25 as published in January 2026. “Biggest” is an opinion, not an official award. Major-trophy totals vary depending on which competitions are included, so this guide compares named competitions rather than claiming one definitive grand total.

Top 10: England’s biggest football clubs — the FINTER debate shortlist

Important: this is a discussion shortlist, not an objective ranking. The clubs are presented in a debate-friendly order, not a claim that 1st place is proven. Use the calculator below to create your own ranking. The snapshot counts major top-flight men’s honours through 2025/26.

Ten contenders: domestic championships and European Cups
ClubEnglish top-flight titlesEuropean Cup / UCLWhat makes its case?
Liverpool206European history, Anfield, worldwide support
Manchester United20313 Premier League titles, global brand, Busby and Ferguson eras
Arsenal140The Invincibles, 2025/26 title, London heritage
Manchester City101Dominant modern era and the 2023 treble
Chelsea62Multiple European triumphs, 21st-century successes
Everton90Historic domestic tradition and long-standing support
Aston Villa71Founding-football heritage and 1982 European victory
Tottenham Hotspur20London tradition, cups and European successes in other competitions
Newcastle United40Generational fan loyalty, St James’ Park, historic domestic honours
Nottingham Forest12Back-to-back European Cups in 1979 and 1980

Method: the European Cup / UCL column excludes Europa League, Conference League and Cup Winners’ Cup victories. League titles include the pre-1992 First Division. Different trophy scopes yield different rankings. Historic trophy counts are sourced from Opta, UEFA and competition records linked below; qualitative descriptions are editorial interpretations.

Why not use a single trophy-total ranking?

A League Cup, a Champions League title and an English top-flight title are not necessarily worth the same to every fan. Counting trophies without defining the competition, time period and weighting can create a misleading answer. A team with fewer league titles might still have a stronger European case; a club with limited trophies can have an enormous local identity.

Interactive club-ranking calculator: you decide what “biggest” means

Set the importance of six factors (0–10). FINTER’s illustrative 0–10 ratings are editorial starting points, not measured global fan numbers, official valuations or objectively ranked clubs. Your weights determine the result instantly.

Six attributes are each rated on a 0–10 editorial scale. The combined score equals the sum of (rating × reader weight) divided by the sum of weights, giving a result out of 10. Ratings are deliberately debatable: especially fans, culture, and recent form. No reader choices or personal data are sent to a server by this calculator.

Ten questions to challenge your ranking

    1. Should a European Cup be worth more than a league title?
    2. Do titles from the 19th century carry the same weight today?
    3. Is Manchester United’s global following more important than its recent results?
    4. Does Liverpool’s European record beat Manchester United’s Premier League dominance?
    5. How much should Arsenal’s Invincibles season matter?
    6. Should Manchester City’s recent dominance outweigh a shorter historical record?
    7. Does Chelsea’s European trophy record strengthen its claim?
    8. Should Everton and Aston Villa get more credit for early English football history?
    9. Can Nottingham Forest’s two European Cups outweigh its one English top-flight crown?
    10. Should the biggest club be judged by men’s football alone, or include women’s football, community programmes and the whole institution?

    Seven reasonable definitions of “biggest”

    1. Domestic league championships

League titles reward sustained performance across entire seasons. Manchester United and Liverpool are level on 20; Arsenal moved to 14 by winning the 2025/26 Premier League. Liverpool’s great eras ran through Shankly, Paisley and Dalglish; United’s through Busby and Ferguson. The modern title count can tell a different story from all-time totals.

    2. Continental success

Liverpool’s six European Cups/Champions Leagues make them the most successful English club in the competition. Manchester United have three; Chelsea and Nottingham Forest have two each; Aston Villa and Manchester City have one each. European pedigree can also include UEFA Cup/Europa League victories, not captured in that column.

    3. Size of fanbase

Manchester United and Liverpool both have global support and generations of travelling fans. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City also have enormous international followings. There is no universally audited count of worldwide supporters: social followers, merchandise sales, TV audiences, match attendance and surveys measure different things. Do not treat any single metric as a definitive fan census.

    4. Money and commercial reach

Deloitte’s 2026 Football Money League ranks clubs by revenue for 2024/25, not by wealth or enterprise value. The English leaders were Liverpool (€836.1m), Manchester City (€829.3m), Arsenal (€821.7m), Manchester United (€793.1m), Tottenham (€672.6m) and Chelsea (€584.1m). A bigger revenue number does not automatically mean better financial health.

    5. Stadium, atmosphere and tradition

Old Trafford, Anfield, the Emirates, the Etihad, Stamford Bridge and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium each mean something different. Consider attendance, capacity, home support, away culture, rituals and intergenerational identity. In the Premier League’s August 2025 capacity snapshot, Old Trafford was listed at 75,653, Liverpool’s Anfield at 61,276 and Arsenal’s Emirates at 60,704 — capacities are not annual attendances and can change.

    6. Cultural impact and iconic stories

United’s Busby Babes and 1999 treble; Liverpool’s 1970s/1980s dominance and 2005 Istanbul comeback; Arsenal’s 2003/04 Invincibles; Chelsea’s 2012 European triumph; Manchester City’s 2023 treble. Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, Everton, Leeds and Newcastle also bring indispensable history. Greatness is more than a balance sheet.

    7. Recent success, resilience and the future

Manchester City defined much of the 2010s and early 2020s in domestic competition. Liverpool won the 2024/25 league title; Arsenal won in 2025/26. A fair future-facing evaluation should also consider youth development, governance and sustainability — not simply current league position. Manchester City’s financial-rule case remains subject to appeal as of the article date, so outcomes should not be treated as final.

The contenders: arguments for and against

Liverpool — European kings with 20 league titles

Strongest case: Six European crowns, 20 English titles, Anfield, deep history and first place among English clubs in Deloitte 2026. Counterargument: Manchester United have a much larger Premier League-era title haul.

Manchester United — English league record-sharers and Premier League era leaders

Strongest case: 20 league championships, 13 of them in the Premier League era, and the Ferguson dynasty. Counterargument: Liverpool lead in European Cups and 2024/25 revenue.

Arsenal — tradition, the Invincibles and 2026 champions

Strongest case: 14 league titles, a record-breaking historic unbeaten league season in 2003/04 and a comeback to the summit in 2025/26. Counterargument: No men’s European Cup/Champions League title so far.

    Manchester City — modern dominance

Strongest case: Ten all-time league titles, eight in the Premier League era, the 2023 treble and significant commercial revenues. Counterargument: Smaller historical European Cup haul than Liverpool or United; ongoing governance debate requires careful, qualified reporting.

    Chelsea — a 21st-century European powerhouse

Strongest case: Two Champions League trophies, domestic cups and breakthrough success across eras. Counterargument: Six English league titles, fewer than Liverpool, United, Arsenal and City.

    Don’t forget other historic giants

Everton (nine league titles), Aston Villa (seven plus a European Cup), Nottingham Forest (two European Cups), Newcastle, Leeds and Tottenham all have compelling claims under specific historical, regional or cultural measures.

Six debates fans will never settle

    1. Are 20 league titles worth more than six European Cups?
    2. Can a club be the biggest without being the richest?
    3. Does a worldwide fanbase matter more than matchgoing culture?
    4. Should trophies won 50 years ago count as much as this season’s?
    5. Do women’s teams, academies and community impact belong in the calculation? We think they deserve dedicated comparisons rather than disappearing from the debate.
    6. Would your ranking change if you removed revenue entirely?
