⚽ How to use match analysis to develop your team

A strong match analysis is not just about the result. It is about understanding why the match developed the way it did, what your team did well, and which areas should become priorities on the training pitch.

With Finter.dk’s Football Match Analysis Generator, you choose exactly which criteria matter to your team. A youth coach can keep the focus on courage, movement, relationships, communication and decision-making, while older youth and senior teams can go deeper into build-up play, pressing, counter-pressing, rest defence, transitions, set pieces and tactical adjustments.

Turn observations into training priorities

The most important part of match analysis is what happens next. Once you identify a development area, turn it into something concrete for the next training session. If the team struggled to play through pressure, for example, you can work on positioning, angles, support distances and decision-making in build-up.

If the issue was defensive transitions, the next session might focus on reactions after losing the ball, rest defence and organisation around the ball. The generator is designed to connect match → reflection → training focus → next match.

You do not need advanced data

Match analysis can be valuable without xG, GPS data or specialist analysis software. Your own observations may be enough. That is why all statistical fields are optional. Use only the information you actually have and combine it with what you saw from the touchline.

For youth, academy and senior football

There is no single match-analysis model that fits every team. Younger players often benefit from a simple review with a few clear learning points, while older players can work with more tactical detail. You can therefore choose your own criteria, add custom ones and save a template that fits your team.

Make the players part of the analysis

Match analysis does not need to be only the coach’s judgement. Ask questions such as When did our press work best?, What made it easier to progress the ball? or What could we have done differently after losing possession? This turns the review into a learning process for the players as well.

❓ Frequently asked questions about football match analysis

What is football match analysis?

Match analysis is a structured review of a game. It can focus on areas such as build-up play, pressing, transitions, chance creation, defensive organisation, player decision-making, mentality and tactical adjustments.

Do I have to complete every criterion?

No. The whole idea of the generator is that you choose only the criteria that matter for your match and your team.

Can I create my own criteria?

Yes. You can add your own analysis criteria and choose whether they use a 1–5 rating, green/amber/red, yes/partly/no, a number or free text.

Can I use it for youth football?

Yes. Use a small number of simple criteria and focus on areas such as courage, movement, relationships, communication and decision-making. You do not need to use the more advanced tactical fields.

Can it be used for academy and senior football?

Yes. You can go into more detail with formations, pressing, counter-pressing, rest defence, transitions, set pieces, opponent analysis and individual players.

Do I need possession data or other statistics?

No. All statistics are optional. The generator works perfectly well with coach observations only.

Can I save my analysis?

Yes. Match data can be saved locally on the device you are using. You can also save your selected criteria as a reusable template.

Can I print the report or save it as a PDF?

Yes. Use the “Print / Save PDF” button after generating the report, then use your browser’s print dialog to print or save as PDF.

What should I do with the analysis afterwards?

Choose a small number of clear development priorities, use them to plan the next training session, and review them again in the next match. This turns match analysis into part of the team’s ongoing development process.
